# Surface Area of a Sphere

## Method #1 – Surface area from the radius

### Formula – How to calculate the surface area of a sphere from the radius

Surface Area = 4 x π x Radius2

##### Example

A sphere has a radius of 10

Surface Area = 4 x π x 102

Surface Area = 4 x 3.14159 x 100

Surface Area = 1256.63

## Method #2 – Surface area from the volume

### Formula – How to calculate the surface area of a sphere from the volume

Step 1: Convert volume to radius

Radius = 3√((3 x Volume) ÷ (4 x π))

Step 2: Convert radius to surface area

Surface Area = 4 x π x Radius2

##### Example

A sphere has a volume of 10

Radius = 3√((3 x 10) ÷ (4 x π))

Radius = 3√((3 x 10) ÷ (4 x 3.14159))

Surface Area = (4/3) x π x 1.336512

Surface Area = 1.333333 x 3.14159 x 1.78626

Surface Area = 7.48226

## Method #3 – Surface Area from the diameter

### Formula – How to calculate the surface area of a sphere from the diameter

Step 1: Convert diameter to radius

Step 2: Convert radius to surface area

Surface Area = 4 x π x Radius2

##### Example

A sphere has a diameter of 10

Radius = 10 ÷ 2 = 5

Surface Area = 4 x π x 52

Surface Area = 4 x 3.14159 x 25

Surface Area = 314.159

## Method #4 – Surface Area from the circumference

### Formula – How to calculate the surface area of a sphere from the circumference

Radius = Circumference ÷ π ÷ 2

Step 2: Calculate the Surface Area

Surface Area = 4 x π x Radius2

##### Example

A sphere has a circumference of 100

Radius = 100 ÷ π ÷ 2

Radius = 100 ÷ 3.14159 ÷ 2
